GREENFIELD TRANSIT HUB (w. Feyi Quadri)
This urban design studio was divided into two primary projects: an initial studio-wide investigation into programming, general massing, and overall urban planning, and an intense design proposal for a specific area of development (with partner). This project involved the design of a transit hub (including bus, "rapid transit," and automated vehicles) that incorporated an ambitious mixed use development program, including office, retail, arts/culture, and residential, as well as programmed outdoor space. The entire project was intended to engage the on-going Almono development of the last remaining brownfield in Pittsburgh (located across the street) and provide a connection between the two densely populated neighborhoods of Oakland and Downtown.
In the second half of the semester, Feyi and I proposed to develop the design of the transit hub itself - that is, the bus/rapid transit station, surrounding retail, and mixed use office/residential buildings, as well as a park which bridged the station with the main street. Our proposal features a sectional solution to very complicated issues such as intense topography, negotiating multiple modes of transit (incl. bike and walking trails), and reincorporating flowing water (previously stream onsite). Our primary focus became the open-air transit station, surrounding retail, and ramping park, with a basic massing exercise for the mid-rise residential and office buildings.
